Reflections

This was my shot, which i took during our lesson.

The genre i chose was horror, as i believed it would be the easiest to signify with a single shot in the limited time and resources that were available to us. The claustrophobic elements of the shot successfully connote horror, and the desperation on Charley's face helps add to the fear which i was trying to convey.

I think the way her hair was across her face helped signify the genre well, as it shows disorganisation and urgency. The frame within a frame helped as well, keeping the shot tight, and leaving the audience to wonder what was going on outside the shot. It doesn't say much about the situation this character is in, and i think this helps by leaving the audience wanting more.

To achieve this shot, it was actually fairly simple. I used the fence on our school field, with the intention of portraying that 'trapped' feeling. To further this, i kept the shot very tight, and Charley's expression helps let the audience know that this character is definitely in some sort of peril or danger.

Unfortunately, it isn't really a shot which would be exclusive to horror, and considering the task was to produce a shot which signifies a particular genre, i think i failed. When shown to others, the responses were varied. Some said it showed horror, some said thriller, some said action- that she looked like the heroine of a big action movie.

Next time, if really trying to signify a genre, i'll make the shot more obvious, applying more common conventions of horror (blood, killers etc.) to anchor the shot to the horror genre in a way which can be easily understood by the audience.
